NZIFF Panel Discussion at the Paramount

Tom Webb (moderator): “Do you agree with this statement: A documentary filmmaker has the duty to tell the truth?”

Margot Nash: “Yes, ethically, we must try. But in the end, this film is my truth. My sister would have a totally different way of telling it.”

Costa Botes: “There is a difference between telling facts and telling the truth. Werner Herzog mentioned it in his famous speech from 1999. The audience needs to believe in the authenticity of what we are doing”.

Sven Pannell: “I thought, I would never have any audience apart from my mum! At first, I made this film for very selfish motivations. But eventually, I told this story so that other people could develop their own truth out of it.”

David Stubbs: “I want to tell their truth, the truth of my subject. Not mine.”
